Stand in My Shoes Empathy Activity and Lesson With Distance Learning Option

$3.00

Stand in My Shoes by Bob Sornson is a great book for introducing the concept of empathy to children; one of the most important social emotional learning skills. This resource is a companion lesson plan for the story. Students engage in cooperative learning to practice identifying feelings in others and figuring out how to show they care. The lesson is interactive and engaging and allows for movement.

This resource now includes a Google Slides (TM) version with the story embedded plus interactive slides with the scenarios.

All scenarios included are related to school or classmates – and you get to select which ones are the best fit for your students. This makes it more likely for them to actually apply this tricky skill of empathy at school after the lesson!

Lesson includes:
• Written plan with ASCA behaviors/mindsets and CASEL competencies
• Discussion questions that partner with the story, as well as an interactive visual aid for additional scaffolding
• Materials for creating scenario folders that students will practice showing empathy with: 18 shoe photos, 9 lower level scenarios, and 13 upper level scenarios
• Editable PPT slide to add your own scenario
• 2 processing worksheet options

*I recommend having 5-10 file folders to use as part of this lesson. It’s more fun with them but totally doable without!*

What others are saying...

“This lesson really helped me teach empathy to my students and help them understand what it means to stand in someone else’s shoes. This seller’s resources are always the best and this one did not disappoint! I used it virtually and in person.”

“I adore this lesson for teaching the concept of empathy to my students. Pairing this activity with the book Stand in My Shoes is a lesson I’ve used multiple times with multiple grade levels and I enjoy it each time! I can tell it really helps the students understand what it’s like to look through the eyes of another”

“I used this with both in-person and online learners. The in-person students loved the opportunity to work in (spaced out) groups and be detectives. The online learners were able to type in and share their answers. Thank you!!”
