Description

This resource is for teaching elementary students all about worry. Many children don’t understand what anxiety really feels and looks like, though it is a crucial SEL skill. It is designed as a tier 1/universal lesson to help students to understand:
  • What is worry?
  • What are worry thoughts?
  • What does worry feel like in the body?
  • How is worry different than anger?
  • What can we do if we realize we’re feeling worried? (breathing, thoughts, circle of control, asking for help)
  • What if we notice worry feelings in others?

The resource includes a presentation (PowerPoint and Google Slides TM) with all of the information. It can be used in one longer worry lesson or broken into 2-3 shorter lessons. Interactive slides are included for distance learning. Multiple worksheets and discussion question task cards are included for in person learning.

There are three different options for how this lesson can be given to your students for distance learning:
1. Self-Guided:
-Students go through all of the slides independently, reading the ones talking about the transitions and completing the activities on the interactive slides

2. Video Presentation + Activities:
-Add your own narration to the PowerPoint then export it as a video to share with students
-Then share just the interactive slides with them to complete

3. Live Lesson:
-Go through the presentation with your class live using whatever learning platform your school is using.

You can post the slides as an assignment in Google Classroom™ (just make sure to select “make a copy for each student”) or you can share with any student (or parent) that has a Google login. It also will work as a PowerPoint assignment for Microsoft Teams (just download it from Google Slides and then upload it – it downloads as a PowerPoint!).

What others are saying...

“I loved the way that this mini lesson was set up. All of the activities throughout kept my students talking throughout the lesson. Not only that, but it allowed them to think about some things and explore feelings that they would have not otherwise addressed.”

“This was a great lesson to discuss how worry can manifest physically and the specific types of strategies to use for managing worry and anxiety. Great lesson I used it with my 4th grade and 6th grade distance learners.”

“This has been very helpful at explaining worry to my students. They seem to grasp the concept easily and ask great questions from the material. It sparks a very helpful discussion.”
