Description

This emotional regulation small group counseling curriculum with cognitive behavioral activities was created for middle to upper elementary students. CBT is an evidence-based counseling intervention but it can be a challenge to implement with children. This resource is a child-friendly and developmentally appropriate way to do cognitive behavioral work with kids!

The CBT-based activities included were designed to help children who struggle with anger, sadness, anxiety, or any combination. By addressing multiple emotions, you can target the feelings both above and below the surface.

Group counseling sessions are hands-on and incorporate play. Each one helps students learn to emotionally regulate through relaxation, problem-solving and coping, and cognitive restructuring.

Resource Includes:
  • Session 1: Welcome and Introduction
  • Session 2: Thoughts vs. Feelings vs. Actions
  • Session 3: Feelings
  • Session 4: Relaxation Skills
  • Session 5: Thoughts, Feelings, Actions Cycle
  • Session 6: Actions and Consequences
  • Session 7: Helpful vs. Unhelpful Thoughts
  • Session 8: Review and Reflect with “Go Think!”
  • Session 9: Challenging Thoughts
  • Session 10: Coping Skills
  • Session 11: Problem Solving
  • Session 12: Closing and Review
  • Additional Components: parent intro letter, student reminder note, student and teacher pre/post surveys, parent notes for reinforcement, and homework

Features:
  • This is a research-based resource. That means that the activities and concepts are based on what research (studies published in peer reviewed journal articles) have found to be effective practices. Specific studies and textbooks are listed in the resource.
  • It’s a ready-to-go group curriculum. It is also flexible. You can easily pick and choose which sessions to do or re-order them to best fit your students, or extend some of the skill topics to two sessions. Activities can be pulled to use for individual sessions.
  • While each session has a specific objective, there are common elements throughout: emotional identification and scaling, metacognition, and relaxation skills.
